The government of Kazakhstan expressed its intent to join the Abraham Accords, a series of diplomatic normalization agreements between Israel and nations in the region.

The accords, brokered by the United States in 2020 and originally signed by Bahrain, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and soon after by Morocco, is named for Abraham, the biblical patriarch shared by Christianity, Islam and Judaism. It is meant to cultivate peace among the three religions.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev reportedly reached out to U.S. President Donald Trump expressing a desire to join this historic peace process, and Kazakhstan’s official accession was announced at the U.S.-Central Asia Summit (C5+1) held in Washington in November 2025.

A report by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies asserts that “Kazakhstan’s accession has the potential to reinvigorate the Accords and expand U.S. cooperation with Central Asia.” In fact, Uzbekistan has also expressed interest in signing the accords.

Kazakhstan’s accession to the Abraham Accords is “more than a symbolic gesture,” according to The Times of Central Asia. It is a strategic initiative that fully adheres to the country’s foreign policy strategy. “Kazakhstan is trying to balance its relations with traditional regional partners and Western countries without hurting its interests,” an article noted.

Joining the accords continues Kazakhstan’s engagement in the Middle East region, ongoing since independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. In addition to increasing trade ties and economic cooperation, Kazakhstan has contributed personnel to United Nations peacekeeping operations in the region. Kazakhstan currently contributes troops to the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon and the U.N. Disengagement Observer Force in the Golan Heights.
