Building on attempts to bring peace and stability to the Levant, Lebanon hosted Jordanian Prime Minister Dr. Jafar Hassan in January 2026.

During the two-day visit, Hassan met separately with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, President Joseph Aoun and Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri.

Dr. Hassan emphasized the importance of maintaining strong relations between the two countries and coordinating positions on important international issues such as maintaining the Gaza ceasefire, stabilizing Syria and employing diplomacy to end armed conflicts.

The meeting led to 21 agreements between the two countries, according to a statement issued by the Lebanese president’s office. They covered fields such as energy, electricity interconnection, industry, investment, tourism, transportation and trade. In his meeting with Jordanian officials, President Aoun stressed the importance of Arab unity, including the creation of an Arab common market to promote trade.

A day before the arrival of Jordan’s prime minister, the Jordanian Lebanese Joint Higher Committee resumed work after a 10-year hiatus. The committee aims to enhance trade and economic and technical cooperation between the two countries.

“There are no direct borders between us, but there are bridges of communication, integration, and historical cultural and economic cooperation at both governmental and popular levels,” Prime Minister Hassan said. “We will strengthen these bridges and enhance our relations, and the coming period will witness more institutional cooperation that will benefit both Jordan and Lebanon.”

    Lebanese Prime Minister Salam agreed.

“What we have accomplished today is a significant step, but the most important thing is to continue following up on what has been achieved,” he said. “It is essential that we establish clear frameworks and practical follow-up mechanisms to ensure the transition from agreement to implementation and from intentions to results.”

Jordan and Lebanon are traditional trading partners, but transit routes through Syria were disrupted by that country’s recently ended civil war.
