Qatar and Sudan signed a memorandum of understanding in November 2014 to increase military cooperation.

The agreement was sealed by Qatari Minister of State for Defense Affairs His Excellency Maj. Gen. Hamad bin Ali Al Attiyah and Sudanese Defense Minister Lt. General Abdel-Rahim Mohammed Hussein.

Hussein said the agreement includes joint training and exercises, military-academic cooperation and exchanges, and partnerships in fields such as military medicine.

“The visit was important. We found a warm welcome and willingness from the Qatari to cooperate with Sudan in all fields,” Hussein said.

The agreement represents a strengthened relationship between the two countries. Qatar supports Sudan’s initiatives toward a peace process in Darfur; Qatar has sponsored peace talks between the Sudanese government and rebels in Darfur. Doha also funds rehabilitation projects in western Sudan.
