Citizens have direct access to communications from the military after the Lebanese Armed Forces launched the LAF Shield app for smartphone users.
Once the program is downloaded to a cellphone, a user can take an active role in fighting crime and promoting security.
“The Army command aims through this application to involve the largest numbers of citizens in defending the country,” according to an Army news release.
Using LAF Shield, Lebanese citizens can report dangers, such as suspicious vehicles or objects, by sending text messages, videos or pictures. Officials plan to use tips received through the app to find missing people and kidnap victims, and identify land mines, fires or other dangers. People can also review photos of wanted or missing people.
Maps provided by LAF Shield allow users to navigate away from areas made unsafe by crime, natural disasters or mines. An “SOS emergency” feature, once activated, would help the Army locate a user in an emergency.
To download, users must possess cellphones with iPhone OS or Android operating systems.
