Staff Brig. Gen. Alaa Abd Allah Seyadi, commander of Bahrain’s Coast Guard, opened the eighth training class for boat commanders in early 2015.

Wishing the participants the best of luck in serving the kingdom and its people, Seyadi noted that commander training is part of an annual plan to enhance the Coast Guard and keep staff current with new technology. The training lasts four months, and the eighth class included many officers and noncommissioned officers from the Coast Guard, government security agencies and the Navy.

Bahrain’s strategic location on the Gulf requires an experienced Coast Guard that is able to defend the nation. In the past, the Coast Guard captured 13 wanted criminals in a raid, foiling an attempt to smuggle them out of the kingdom. In 2013, the Coast Guard prevented a ship from smuggling explosives and weapons into Bahrain after radar detected it 118 miles away trying to enter national waterways illegally. With the help of Bahrain’s Air Force, the Coast Guard tracked the ship and stopped it 2 miles from the village of Krana. Onboard they found many explosive devices, anti-tank missiles, hand grenades and AK-47 magazines.
