A Striking Force and Rich Source of Information

Military intelligence has been an important and difficult element in all Iraqi security equations, providing a torrent of information related to the country’s security situation.

That is why the work carried out by the Iraqi Military Intelligence Directorate has witnessed a significant development impacting all three military branches (land, sea and air).

Gathering bits of information has been the cornerstone of intelligence action, since it helps to examine, handle, identify and deal with targets.

Despite several successive leaders taking charge of the Directorate of the Iraqi Military Intelligence, it is Maj. Gen. Saad Mozher Al Allaq who has truly made a difference as a leader, illustrated by the increase in the directorate’s achievements within the short time under his leadership. His achievements are considered a record in military terms.

Since the start, he has taken swift and determined action, working to promote the directorate by adopting a policy aimed at balancing the work of internal and external intelligence, as each one influences the other.

He has rearranged the internal affairs of the intelligence sector and laid the foundation for an excellent administrative system that gives due attention to the issues of directorate members as well as to administrative work. Departmental sections have been properly arranged, and a unified database has been created, which helps officers and warrant officers manage their tasks in accordance with the inspection regulations of the Iraqi Armed Forces’ General Inspection Department and to work continuously within the specific time that employees are given to complete tasks.

Aside from this, the general supervised the creation of the Second Missions Regiment, intended to carry out missions in support of the First Regiment. He also directly supervised creation of a Counter-Terrorism Intelligence Cell charged with performing difficult and dangerous tasks, and he founded the Special Duties Company.

But Maj. Gen. Al Allaq did not stop there. Instead, he directed the Counter-Terrorism Intelligence Cell and the First and Second Regiments to launch missile strikes against Daesh gangs using tube rocket launchers. Dozens of strikes focused on the Jurf al Nasser and Fallujah areas, as well as on western areas of Anbar province, leaving dozens dead and wounded and destroyed many motor vehicles, hideouts, gathering places and booby-trap plants. These strikes were unprecedented for traditional intelligence work and prepared the way for advancing the work of Iraqi Military Intelligence.

In addition, Iraqi Military Intelligence has played a distinct role in supplying military ground units with an extremely rich source of information, enabling them to achieve highly visible victories.

Military Intelligence has also provided the Air Force with information to pinpoint Daesh members, including their gathering places, hideouts, tunnels and movements, which has contributed to their destruction using targeted air strikes.

In a similar vein, international coalition forces have relied heavily on Iraqi Military Intelligence information to carry out overflights and make precise strikes on targets. The directorate coordinates with international coalition forces to share information, identify targets, and exchange security and intelligence information.

Military Intelligence was also able to provide Iraqi units on the ground with accurate information about the enemy’s intentions against them and, in light of this, prevented many Daesh attacks, carried out counterattacks, dealt with Daesh criminal gangs, and attacked their hideouts and convoys.

This is all in addition to the pre-emptive information that contributed to the cancellation and failure of many Daesh attacks before they were even launched.

Under the direct supervision and control of the general and based on accurate information, monitoring, investigation, and information analysis and intersection, the heroes of the Directorate of Iraqi Military Intelligence in the Counter-Terrorism Intelligence Cell and in the First and Second Regiments were able to achieve the following:

Terrorist groups

• The dismantling of 11 terrorist networks that were planning to target citizens, including visitors to the holy shrines, in many provinces, including the capital, Baghdad
• The destruction of over a dozen large caches of ammunition
• The destruction of many terrorist havens
• The seizure of 10 cars used by terrorist groups to commit crimes
• The seizure of a large number of improvised explosive devices, explosive belts and various weapons

Proactive operations

• The killing of a suicide bomber in the Al Taji area, before he was able to blow himself up amid citizens and security checkpoints
• The killing of two suicide bombers in Al-Amiriya district, before they were able to implement their terrorist operations against innocent citizens in Baghdad

Missile strikes and their outcomes

These strikes were launched under the direct supervision of the director of Iraqi Military Intelligence, by the heroes of the Counter-Terrorism Intelligence Cell and the First and Second Regiments, based on highly accurate information and coordinates. Thirty-six missile strikes were launched against Daesh; dozens of rockets were used for each strike, causing the following destruction:

• Thirteen important positions for Daesh criminals
• Several weapons inventories
• Booby-trap and IED plants
• Several headquarters and hideouts used by Daesh leaders
• Daesh field hospitals
• Several so-called Sharia courts
• Seventy-two cars and various types of vehicles

In addition, these strikes killed more than 400 terrorists and injured dozens more.

The Iraqi Military Intelligence Directorate, represented by the heroes of the Counter-Terrorism Intelligence Cell and the First and Second Regiments, is still chasing the remaining terrorists — attacking them with powerful strikes, tracking the terrorist groups domestically, arresting them and dismantling their cells — through unique, proactive operations. Moreover, the heroes of the Iraqi Military Intelligence Directorate continue to work on developing their combat and physical potential through continuous training, and increasing the efficiency of their scientific skills against terrorist operations and acts, following plans and methods designed for this purpose.

We must not forget to mention that the Iraqi Military Intelligence Directorate has lost a number of its members, including officers and associates. They have made the ultimate sacrifice with their heroic confrontation of terrorist acts, demonstrating a rare courage that history will inscribe in golden letters.
